Pineville Fire Department along with Carolina and Steele Creek Fire Departments were alerted to a smell of gas inside the structure at Stough Memorial Baptist Church. Upon arrival of Pineville Engine 2, Assistant Chief L. Gladden assumed command and instructed his crew to investigate the structure. The structure had been evacuated leaving numerous children and teachers out in the cold. After investigating part of the sanctuary. The children and teachers were allowed to enter the office area as a temporary shelter until the Fire Department could find the source of the smell. Unable to find a source of the smell, Pineville Engine's 2 and 3 along with Steele Creek Engine 2 set up fan of ventilating the day care section along with part of the sanctuary. During the ventilation a bystander walked up and asked if we had found the source of the smell and began to explain that he had spilled some gas on his clothes while filling his vehicle, and walked through the building. The incident was placed under control and all units were placed inservice after an hour of operating on scene. Pineville Engine 2 staging in front of
